Merlot gained fame in France as the leading variety from the Right Bank in Bordeaux. In the US, it has vacillated over the years from darling to outcast and finally settled into its rightful spot as a respected contender in the fine wine category. When grown in the hamlet of Geyserville, the variety explodes with luscious, juicy dark blue and purple fruit flavors focusing primarily on plum. In a single word, Merlot could be defined as tasting "purple". Enticing aromas of plum, blueberry, raspberry, and cola mingle with fleeting hints of herb and flowers. The palate is generous and plush with an elusive herbaceous accent that gives a nod to its parentage of the more traditionally herbal Cabernet Franc and Carménère.
